When the jazz band teacher plays a recording of this before rehearsing it, and you're sitting on the drumset, and you hear the fills at the start...and then notice the entire jazz band has turned around and is now staring at you.
I was gonna play THE CHICKEN, CARAVAN, AND THIS OTHER SONG CALLED BLUE BONES in 2020 for festival in middle school on bass BUT COVID cancelled all concerts. From there my skill went downhill, but I'm applying to this art high school and I'm auditioning with this piece in hope of making it in. Wish me luck yall ✌️
"Designed for high school and advanced junior high school band" Edit: I'm now a freshman in high school playing this song with my school's top jazz band. How the turntables 😅
The only piece where 1st trumpet gets it easier than 3rd.
For drummers who want something to play in the beginning: - spam Bonham triplets - spam RLRLKK (if you're fast at 'em) - spam six stroke roll (RLLRRL) All in rapid succession and you can pretty much orchestrate them however you like, for this, toms are generally better, snare and hi-hat occasional to trick people into thinking you are in time 😉🤙
Last solo of high school was over this song. Probably the best I'd ever improved despite having shaky hands and anxiety, which held me back from making Allstate and having more success in jazz as an alto sax player. Never forget the moment I triumphed over all of that crap and showed what I'd spent so much time practicing for. Haven't played much since sadly, but I'll always have that memory defining how I saw myself as a player.
My jazz band played last year and for one of the fills at the start the guitarist pulled out a rubber chicken and started honking it. Good times.
It's customary to put an overly obnoxious sax solo at the start of the song and man, my director got his buddy to come in for our performance and surprise play for the start of the song, as the drummer I was having a blast, best performance of high school ever
Yesterday, my high school jazz band had a performance where we had the honor to play with Ed Calle for this song. I don't think I'll ever experience the energy and emotions I had yesterday, it was incredible.
I'm a freshman bass player for jazz band at my high school and my favorite part of the whole song is measure 47 and it took a while for me to learn this part because there is no bass part so I had to find the notes and by the help of my teacher I finally got it but it's not the best but I still have 1 more month for the spring concert. Wish me luck please 🙏
Is there any bass player here that can hit every note starting on the first solo of the saxophone? Bro that bass riff was pretty tough back when I was playing because it's so fast, and gets real funky. Basically I would just play whatever as long as it went with the song's scale.
I had a bass solo where the brass solo was! First and probably ONLY standing ovation I'll EVER get (this was when the school held their reward ceremony circa 2020)
