Description
A. Emmett Adams (1878-1953) composed The Bells of St. Mary's in 1917, setting lyrics by Douglas Furber after the two men were inspired by the peal of bells from St. Mary's Church in Southampton, England, while awaiting passage on an ocean liner. Rather than a sacred hymn, the work is a sentimental ballad celebrating romance, homecoming, and marriage, with the church bells serving as a symbol of enduring love and faithful devotion. Published in London later that year, the song quickly gained popularity throughout Britain and North America and was adopted by singers and dance orchestras during the First World War. Its widespread early performances established it as one of the era's best-loved popular songs. Nearly three decades later, The Bells of St. Mary's achieved renewed international fame through its prominent inclusion in Leo McCarey's Academy Award-winning 1945 film of the same name, starring Bing Crosby and Ingrid Bergman, after which Crosby's recording became the definitive interpretation for generations of listeners. Today, The Bells of St. Mary's remains one of the classic sentimental songs of the early twentieth century, cherished for its graceful melody, nostalgic charm, and lasting association with both the celebrated film and the rich tradition of English and American popular song. This orchestration has been completed by Timothy Broege. Instrumentation: 2(2nd dPicc).2.2.2: 3Sax(AAT; opt.): 4.3.3.1: Timp.Perc(2): Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set).
