Description
Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) composed his SYMPHONY No. 2 in B major, Op. 14, in 1927 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the October Revolution. Subtitled "To October," the work reflects the Soviet regime's call for revolutionary fervor and mass participation. Rather than following traditional symphonic structure, Shostakovich crafted a highly experimental and modernist single-movement work that culminates in a choral finale setting a text by Alexander Bezymensky, praising Lenin and the revolution. Premiered in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) on November 5, 1927, the piece was met with mixed reactions, with some praising its innovation and others criticizing its lack of emotional depth. Today, SYMPHONY No. 2 is not among Shostakovich's most frequently performed symphonies; it is viewed more as a historical document of its time, showcasing the young composer's bold early experiments and the political pressures of Soviet artistic life.
