Description
Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) composed his Symphony No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 7 (FS 16) between 1891 and 1892, shortly after returning to Denmark from an extended study tour of Germany, France, and Italy and during the early years of his career as a second violinist in Copenhagen's Royal Danish Orchestra. Dedicated to his wife, the sculptor Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen, the symphony reveals a remarkably assured compositional voice, already displaying the bold tonal thinking and rhythmic vitality that would become hallmarks of Nielsen's mature style. Most striking is the work's innovative tonal design: although it begins in G minor, it concludes triumphantly in C major, reflecting the composer's lifelong fascination with tonal conflict and resolution. The symphony received its premiere on March 14, 1894, in Copenhagen, conducted by Johan Svendsen with the Royal Danish Orchestra, with Nielsen himself performing in the second violin section. The enthusiastic reception immediately established him as Denmark's leading young symphonist. Today, Symphony No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 7 is recognized as one of the finest symphonic debuts in the repertoire and the first chapter in Nielsen's groundbreaking cycle of six symphonies, occupying a secure place in the international orchestral canon for its freshness, structural originality, and unmistakably individual musical voice. Instrumentation: 3.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). Reprint edition.
