Description
One of the most popular ballets, Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) composed SWAN LAKE in 1875-76. Tchaikovsky borrowed from the Russian and German folk tales to tell the of story a princess, Odette, who was turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer's curse. SWAN LAKE premiered on March 4, 1877, at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. The present critical edition by Carl Simpson is based upon the full score issued by P. Jurgenson sometime between 1881 and 1896 and the Nikolai Kashkin piano reduction. Act II opens with No. 10, Scène: Moderato (sometimes described as the act's "Overture"), as Prince Siegfried, having become separated from his companions during a swan hunt, reaches the moonlit lakeside where the enchanted swan maidens appear. Here Tchaikovsky introduces the haunting music associated with Odette and the swans, including the celebrated oboe melody whose melancholy contour and accompaniment establish the supernatural and tragic atmosphere that dominates the lakeside scenes. Siegfried soon learns that Odette is a princess transformed into a swan by the sorcerer Rothbart and that only a vow of faithful love can break the spell, making this opening scene the musical gateway to the ballet's central romance and tragedy. Act II, No. 10: Scène is among the most instantly recognizable passages in all ballet music and is also frequently heard independently as the opening movement of the familiar concert suite from Swan Lake. The ballet itself has become one of the defining works of the international classical repertoire, its music inseparable from the modern image of nineteenth-century Romantic ballet.
