Description
The Suite Algérienne, Op. 60, sparked by a trip that Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) took to Algeria in 1873, debuted in Paris in December 1880 with Edouard Colonne conducting. For the rest of his life, the composer nurtured a deep appreciation for the country which inspired the work. The fourth movement, Marche militaire française, has become popular with audiences. Its patriotic energy, contrasted with the exoticism of the last three movements, serves as a time capsule of occupied Algeria and the feelings of security that the composer felt on meeting French troops and other sights that reminded him of his homeland. Instrumentation: 2+Picc.2.2.2: 4.2+2.3.1: Timp.Perc(2-3): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). Reprint edition.
