Description
Arthur Foote (1853-1937), a leading figure of the "Second New England School" of American composers, composed his Serenade in E major, Op. 25 in 1891, from which the Air and Gavotte are drawn as two contrasting movements. Reflecting Foote's deep grounding in the German Romantic tradition, particularly the influence of Brahms, these movements combine classical poise with expressive warmth. The Air offers a lyrical, flowing melody supported by rich yet transparent harmonies, while the Gavotte provides a lively and rhythmically buoyant contrast, evoking the elegance of Baroque dance through a Romantic lens. Though part of a larger serenade, these two movements are frequently performed independently, showcasing Foote's craftsmanship and his ability to balance structural clarity with melodic charm. Today, Air and Gavotte remains a valued work in the string orchestra repertoire, appreciated for its accessibility, stylistic refinement, and its role in the development of an early American concert tradition. Instrumentation: String Orchestra (8.8.5.5.5 in set). Reprint edition.
