Description
Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957) composed his Schauspiel-Ouvertüre (Dramatic Overture), Op. 4 in 1911, at only fourteen years of age, during the extraordinary period in which the Viennese prodigy, already praised by Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss and studying with Alexander Zemlinsky, was beginning to establish an international reputation. The overture was Korngold's first major work for full orchestra and was written directly into orchestral score. Despite its title, it is not securely associated with a particular play, although various Shakespearean works were later suggested as possible inspirations. Its sweeping themes, dense counterpoint, brilliant brass writing, and sumptuous late-Romantic orchestration already display many characteristics of Korngold's mature style. Dedicated to the celebrated conductor Arthur Nikisch, Schauspiel-Ouvertüre received its world premiere on December 14, 1911, at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, with Nikisch conducting the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Today, Schauspiel-Ouvertüre, Op. 4 remains outside the standard orchestral repertoire but has benefited from the broader modern revival of Korngold's concert music and is valued both as a remarkably accomplished work by a fourteen-year-old composer and as an early demonstration of the rich orchestral language that would later distinguish his operas, concert works, and Hollywood scores.
