Description
Saul, HWV 53 was composed in 1738 by George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) as the grand introduction to his English oratorio Saul, based on the Old Testament narrative of King Saul, David, and Jonathan. Written during Handel's flourishing period of English-language sacred drama, SAUL premiered on January 16, 1739, at the King's Theatre in London and was notable for its lavish orchestration, including carillon and expanded instrumental forces. The Overture sets the regal and ceremonial tone for the unfolding story of jealousy, loyalty, and tragic downfall. Structured in the French overture style with a stately dotted-rhythm introduction followed by a lively fugal section, it precedes the opening celebrations of David's victory over Goliath and the seeds of Saul's destructive envy. The Saul Overture stands as a powerful concert work in its own right, frequently performed as a Baroque orchestral showpiece. Reprint edition of the 1880 Ebenezer Prout parts, which included optional expanded instrumentation but lacks a score. The score included is from the 1862 Friedrich Chrysander edition, but it does not reflect the addition of the optional instrumentation. The rehearsal letters from the Prout parts have been added to the Chrysander score to aid in rehearsal. Instrumentation: (2).2.(2).2: (2).0.0.0: Org in sc: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set).
