Description
Left incomplete at the time of his death, DOKTOR FAUST occupied Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924) between the years 1916 and 1924. He had intended it to be his masterpiece. A completed version was constructed by Philipp Jarnach for the first performance of the opera at the Sächsisches Staatstheater in Dresden on May 21, 1925 under the direction of Fritz Busch. The SARABANDE & CORTÈGE: ZWEI STUDIEN ZU DOKTOR FAUST, Op. 51/ BV 282 (TWO STUDIES FOR "DOKTOR FAUST"), a pair of orchestral studies made by the composer while working on his magnum opus, allude to the dark supernatural themes presented in the larger work.
