Description
Raymonda, Op. 57 is a ballet in three acts by Alexander Glazunov (1865-1936), composed in collaboration with choreographer Marius Petipa, librettist Lydia Pashkova, and theatre director Ivan Vsevolozhsky. It was conceived for a benefit performance by the ballerina Pierina Legnani, which took place in St. Petersburg on January 19, 1898. The title character, the countess Raymonda, waits for the return of her beloved knight Jean de Brienne from the Crusades. Warned in a vision that the Saracen knight, Abderakhman, will abduct her, she is rescued from the villain by her returning knight and their wedding is followed by a royal celebration. Raymonda Suite, Op. 57a is a selection of excerpts from the ballet. Reprint edition. Instrumentation: 2+Picc(dFl3).2(2dEH).2.2: 4.3.3.1: Timp.Perc(4-6): Hp.Csta: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set).
