Description
Franz Krommer (1759-1831) composed his Nonett (Harmonie in E-flat major), Op. 79, P IV:12 around 1810, during the flourishing late-Classical tradition of Harmoniemusik-music for wind ensemble cultivated particularly at the aristocratic and imperial courts of Vienna and Central Europe for concerts, festivities, and other social occasions. Scored for two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two horns, and contrabassoon, the work belongs to a substantial group of Krommer's compositions originally published under the designation Harmonie. The ninth instrument expands the standard Viennese wind octet with a sixteen-foot bass voice, although the contrabassoon largely doubles the second bassoon at the octave and can therefore sometimes be omitted, accounting for the work's frequent modern designation as an "Octet-Partita." Its four movements (1. Allegro; 2. Menuetto: Allegretto-Trio; 3. Andante allegretto; 4. Allegro assai) combine Classical formal clarity with Krommer's characteristically fluent wind writing, exploiting contrasts among the paired instruments while giving the ensemble a notably rich and resonant sonority. Today, Nonett (Harmonie in E-flat major), Op. 79 remains outside the standard chamber repertoire but is among Krommer's more accessible and frequently recorded works for winds, performed by specialist wind ensembles and valued as a substantial example of the Harmoniemusik tradition that flourished around the time of Mozart and Beethoven. Instrumentation: 0.2.2.2+1(CBsn): 2.0.0.0. Reprint of the edition Kurt Janetzky.
