Description
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) originally composed MEIN JESU, WAS FÜR SEELENWEH, BWV 487 for voice and keyboard. It belongs to a collection of sacred songs written likely in the 1730s or early 1740s. Reflecting on Christ's suffering and the believer's internal anguish, the music is marked by a plaintive melody and a gently supportive accompaniment, showcasing Bach's gift for marrying text and musical expression in miniature form. These songs were probably intended for private or small group devotional use rather than public liturgical performance, and remained unpublished during his lifetime. A transcription for string orchestra by Leopold Stokowski is presented in this Kalmus edition. Instrumentation: String Orchestra (8.8.5.5.5 in set). Reprint edition.
