Description
Following a year of studying Mexican folk music, Reed created this work which is subtitled A Mexican Folk Song Symphony for Concert Band. Set in three contrasting movements, the entire work musically portrays a religious festival. The variety of textures is evident from the beginning of the first movement entitled "Prelude and Aztec Dance." The second movement, "Mass," is more somber and reflective. "Carnival," the last movement, is joyous and invigorating. A hearty time-honored work. (21:58) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Played this several years ago in a semi-professional band. Unfortunately, the conductor had an hour rehearsal before the concert. By the time we got to the last movement, the brass players were very tired. We did our best… great piece!

My high school symphonic band played the third movement (Carnival) in the early '80s. I thought my trombone part was challenging (and fun); but wow, there's a lot more ink on the page for the woodwinds. Hats off!

My favorite wind band piece since I first played it over 15 years ago. Lovely piece.
