Description
Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) composed the music for Kuningas Kristian II (King Christian II), Op. 27 in 1898 as incidental music for a historical drama by his friend, the Swedish-Finnish writer Adolf Paul, whose play recounts the ill-fated love of the sixteenth-century Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish monarch Christian II for the commoner Dyveke Sigbritsdatter against a background of court intrigue and political violence. Sibelius initially supplied four numbers for the stage production and added three more (Nocturne, Serenade, and Ballade) during the summer of 1898; from this material he fashioned the orchestral King Christian II Suite, comprising: 1. Nocturne; 2. Elegie; 3. Musette; 4. Serenade; 5. Ballade, whose music ranges from the intimate lyricism of the opening movements to the dramatic final Ballade, associated with Christian's fury surrounding the Stockholm Bloodbath of 1520. The original incidental music was first heard at the Swedish Theatre in Helsinki on February 24, 1898, with Sibelius conducting the first four numbers, while the completed five-movement concert suite received its premiere in December 1898 under Robert Kajanus; Sibelius was particularly pleased with the result, regarding it as an unusually successful and unified orchestral whole. Published in 1899, the suite was important in Sibelius's growing international reputation, being among his earliest published orchestral music and was introduced to British audiences by Henry Wood at a Promenade Concert in 1901. Today, Kuningas Kristian II (King Christian II) Suite, Op. 27 remains a respected though less frequently performed part of Sibelius's orchestral repertoire, valued for its atmospheric scoring, melodic immediacy, and early manifestations of the distinctive dramatic and orchestral voice that would soon reach maturity in Finlandia and the First and Second Symphonies.
