Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) composed the Grande Valse Brillante in E-flat major, Op. 18 in 1833, shortly after establishing himself in Paris, and it was published by Maurice Schlesinger in 1834 with a dedication to his pupil Laura Horsford. Although Chopin had written numerous earlier waltzes, Op. 18 was his first published work in the genre and represents his transformation of the fashionable social dance of the Parisian salon into a brilliant concert piece, combining the characteristic three-beat waltz rhythm with rapid passagework, ornamentation, contrasting lyrical episodes, and a dazzling coda. Its popularity eventually encouraged numerous arrangements, most famously including Igor Stravinsky's 1909 orchestration for the Diaghilev ballet Les Sylphides. The orchestral version heard here was prepared by French composer, arranger, and Durand editor Lucien Garban (1877-1959), working under the pseudonym "Roger Branga," and was published in 1936. Scored for a relatively modest orchestra, it translates Chopin's sparkling keyboard figurations into changing instrumental colors while retaining the elegance and propulsion of the original.
