Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) composed the melody now known as AUSTRIA in 1797 for the patriotic hymn Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser ("God Save Emperor Francis"), written in honor of the Habsburg emperor Francis II. Haydn subsequently incorporated the melody into the variation movement of his String Quartet in C major, Op. 76, No. 3, the "Emperor" Quartet, and the tune later became familiar internationally through both the German national anthem and its widespread use as a Christian hymn tune. The English hymn "Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken" actually predates Haydn's melody: Anglican clergyman and former slave-ship captain John Newton (1725-1807), best remembered as the author of "Amazing Grace," wrote the text for his Olney Hymns of 1779, drawing especially upon Psalm 87 and Isaiah 33, and it was only subsequently paired with Haydn's AUSTRIA tune, a combination that became one of the most familiar settings of Newton's words. American composer and arranger James D. Ployhar (1926-2007) fashioned Haydn's melody into Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken (Austrian Hymn) for concert band. Conceived for developing wind ensembles, the arrangement presents the stately hymn melody in a full concert-band sonority while giving young players experience with sustained phrasing, balance, blend, and chorale-style ensemble playing. Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken retains a place in the traditional school and community-band literature as an accessible treatment of one of Haydn's most enduring melodies; its inclusion in historical instrumental-music curriculum lists also reflects the important role such hymn-tune transcriptions played in twentieth-century educational band programming.
