Description
Franz Anton Hoffmeister (1754-1812) composed his Concerto for Viola in D major probably in the late 1780s or early 1790s, although its exact date is unknown. The surviving evidence establishes only that it existed by 1799, when the Viennese music dealer Johann Traeg offered it for sale in his catalogue. Hoffmeister was both a prolific composer and one of Vienna's important music publishers (personally acquainted with Mozart, who dedicated his String Quartet in D major, K. 499, the "Hoffmeister," to him) and his concerto belongs to a relatively small body of substantial eighteenth-century works treating the viola as a true virtuoso solo instrument. The concerto survives not in Hoffmeister's autograph but in a manuscript set of orchestral parts preserved in Dresden, formerly owned by composer and Dresden Court Orchestra violist Joseph Schubert, whose cadenza appears in the solo part. It is scored for solo viola, two oboes, two horns, and strings and follows the Classical three-movement plan: 1. Allegro; 2. Adagio; 3. Rondo. Today, the Concerto for Viola in D major occupies a position quite disproportionate to Hoffmeister's otherwise modest presence in modern concert life: together with Carl Stamitz's D-major concerto, it is one of the principal Classical-period concertos in the viola repertoire and has become a standard work for advanced study, solo competitions, and professional orchestral auditions, where its elegant Classical phrasing, clarity of articulation, command of the viola's registers, and demanding passagework provide a particularly revealing test of a violist's musicianship and technique. Instrumentation: 0.2.0.0: 2.0.0.0: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set): Solo Viola in set. Reprint of the edition by Hans Mlynarczyk and Albert Kranz.
