Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) composed the Concerto for Piano No. 21 in C Major, K. 467 in Vienna in early 1785, completing it on March 9 during one of the most astonishingly productive periods of his career, just weeks after finishing the dramatic Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466. Written for Mozart's own subscription concerts at the height of his fame as Vienna's leading pianist-composer, the concerto received its premiere on March 10, 1785, at the Burgtheater with the composer as soloist. Richly scored with trumpets and timpani, the work combines ceremonial brilliance with lyrical elegance, while its radiant slow movement achieved worldwide recognition after its use in the 1967 Swedish film Elvira Madigan, earning the concerto its enduring popular nickname. Although the cinematic association introduced the music to a broader audience, the concerto's lasting reputation rests on its masterful dialogue between soloist and orchestra, expressive depth, and flawless balance.
