Description
Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf's (1739-1799) CONCERTO FOR DOUBLE BASS No. 2 in E major, Kr. 172 was composed in 1762, during his tenure as Kapellmeister at the court of the Prince-Bishop of Breslau, where he wrote a number of concertos for the court's outstanding double bassist, Friedrich Pischelberger. Written at a time when the double bass was rarely featured as a solo instrument, the concerto is both technically demanding and lyrically expressive, showcasing the virtuosic possibilities of the instrument while retaining the elegance and wit of the Classical style. Today, Dittersdorf's bass concertos, particularly this work, are cornerstones of the double bass repertoire, frequently performed in recitals, competitions, and conservatories worldwide, celebrated for their blend of virtuosity, charm, and historical importance in expanding the instrument's solo literature.
