Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) composed his Concerto for Cello No. 2 in D minor, Op. 119 in 1902, more than three decades after his widely celebrated Concerto for Cello No. 1. Written for the Dutch cellist Joseph Hollman, the work reflects the composer's mature style-refined, structurally inventive, and rich in melodic elegance. Unlike the seamless, single-movement design of the First Concerto, the Second is cast in two large sections, each subdivided into contrasting episodes that together create a multi-movement feel within a continuous framework. The music alternates between dramatic intensity, lyrical introspection, and moments of playful charm, all while demanding both technical finesse and expressive depth from the soloist.
