Description
Amy Beach (1867–1944) composed her charming piano suite CHILDREN'S CARNIVAL, Op. 25, in 1894, offering six characterful movements—Promenade, Columbine, Pantalon, Pierrot and Pierrette, Secrets, and Harlequin—each depicting figures from the pantomime and commedia dell'arte traditions of the late nineteenth century. The work reflects Beach's mastery of lyrical melody, refined pianism, and a playful narrative imagination, at a time when American composers were striving for national voice and recognition. The suite was published in Boston in 1894 and quickly found favor in both student recitals and domestic music-making. Today, CHILDREN'S CARNIVAL remains a staple of intermediate piano repertoire, beloved for its vivid imagery, engaging character, and the way it provides a delightful introduction to Beach's broader creative output.
