Description
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) composed Cantata No. 48: Ich elender Mensch, wer wird mich erlösen, BWV 48 in 1723 during his first annual cycle of cantatas as Thomaskantor in Leipzig, writing it for the Nineteenth Sunday after Trinity. The anonymous libretto opens with Saint Paul's anguished cry from Romans 7:24--"O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?"--and traces a spiritual journey from the despair of humanity's sinful condition to the assurance of redemption through Christ. The cantata is remarkable for its austere opening chorus, in which Bach weaves the chorale melody Herr Jesu Christ, ich schrei zu dir into an intricate double canon, symbolizing the inescapable demands of divine law before concluding with a chorale of serene confidence. Ich elender Mensch, wer wird mich erlösen received its premiere on October 3, 1723, at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig under the composer's direction. Today, Cantata No. 48, BWV 48 is regarded as one of the most compelling sacred works from Bach's first Leipzig cantata cycle, admired for its profound theological insight, expressive contrapuntal mastery, and moving progression from human frailty to the hope of salvation, securing its place among the enduring masterpieces of the Lutheran cantata repertoire.
