Description
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) composed Cantata No. 196: Der Herr denket an uns, BWV 196 around 1707-1708, making it one of his earliest surviving sacred cantatas and an important example of his pre-Leipzig style. Setting verses 12-15 of Psalm 115, the work is scored for strings, continuo, SATB chorus, soprano aria, and tenor-bass duet, and unfolds in five concise movements without recitatives, reflecting the influence of the seventeenth-century sacred concerto tradition. Although its exact purpose cannot be established with certainty, scholars have long associated the cantata with the wedding of Johann Lorenz Stauber, the minister who had officiated Bach's own marriage to Maria Barbara in 1707, and Regina Wedemann on June 5, 1708, in Dornheim; the psalm's repeated blessings upon households and children make it especially appropriate for such an occasion, though it could equally have served a general thanksgiving service. Because the original performing materials have not survived, the precise date and location of the premiere remain uncertain, with a first performance in Dornheim around June 1708 remaining the most widely accepted hypothesis. Today, Cantata No. 196: Der Herr denket an uns, BWV 196 is valued as one of Bach's earliest cantatas, offering a fascinating glimpse into the emerging genius who would later redefine the genre, and it continues to be regularly performed and recorded for its graceful lyricism, elegant contrapuntal writing, and joyful expression of divine blessing. Instrumentation: Hpschrd(in score).Org(in score): Str (2.2.2.1.1 in set): Solo STB: Mix Chor. Reprint of the edition by Wilhelm Rush, part of the Bach Gesellschaft Ausgabe.
