Henri Vieuxtemps (1820-1881) composed Ballade and Polonaise, Op. 38 in 1862 at the height of his international career as one of the nineteenth century's greatest violin virtuosos and composers. Dedicated to Belgian violinist Désiré Lejeune, the work reflects Vieuxtemps's mastery of combining poetic lyricism with dazzling technical brilliance, opening with a noble, improvisatory Ballade before giving way to a spirited Polonaise whose stately Polish dance rhythms evoke the heroic style popularized by Frédéric Chopin and Henryk Wieniawski.
