Description
Zoltán Kodály (1882 - 1967) composed his ADAGIO for Violin (or Viola or Cello) and Piano in 1905, dedicating it to the accomplished violinist Imre Waldbauer. Though only a brief piece, the work showcases Kodály's early voice, blending his Romantic heritage with an emerging interest in Hungarian folk-inflected lyricism and a sense of introspective calm. This work quickly found a place in recital programs, especially after Kodály published alternate versions for viola and cello in 1910. Today, the ADAGIO is appreciated as a gem of the Hungarian chamber-music repertoire, frequently performed and recorded for all three solo instruments, valued for its warmth, melodic beauty, and the intimate expressive voice of one of the 20th century's leading Hungarian composers.
