Description
Leone Sinigaglia (1868-1944) composed 12 Variations on a Theme by Franz Schubert, Op. 19 for oboe and piano in 1898, during the period he spent in Vienna absorbing the Austro-German chamber-music tradition and studying with Eusebius Mandyczewski, the distinguished musicologist and close associate of Johannes Brahms to whom the work is dedicated. Taking as its subject Franz Schubert's familiar song Heidenröslein ("Hedge-Rose"), D. 257, Sinigaglia presents the melody as an Andantino in G major followed by twelve sharply characterized variations, ranging from lyrical and contemplative transformations to brilliant virtuoso writing and concluding with an exuberant Allegro burlesco; the work thus combines Sinigaglia's essentially late-Romantic musical language with the formal discipline and variation technique cultivated in the Viennese tradition. The composition was published in Leipzig in 1898, and a manuscript version for oboe and string quartet also survives. Today, 12 Variations on a Theme by Franz Schubert, Op. 19 remains a relatively uncommon but valued contribution to the Romantic oboe repertoire, appearing in recitals and recordings and offering oboists a substantial concert work that combines lyrical expression, technical display, and imaginative variation of one of Schubert's best-known melodies.
