An Interview with Ingrid Jacobson Clarfield

Ingrid Jacobson Clarfield is a piano editor, educator, and clinician who has been part of the Alfred Music family for 25 years. A graduate of Oberlin, she has spent 60 years teaching piano at the pre-college and college levels, and her work centers on helping teachers guide students to practice more efficiently and perform more artistically.

 

Q: Who has shaped how you think about music?

My teachers, colleagues and my students - 60 years of teaching piano pre-college and college students.

Q: What's the hardest creative problem you've ever had to solve in your work, and how did you get through it?

Consulting with colleagues whose musicianship I admire.

Q: Do you have a favorite piece on Alfred.com?

Consolation for RH Alone by Dennis Alexander.

Q: Where did you study?

Oberlin - studied with John Perry.

Q: Did you grow up in a musical household, or did music find you some other way?

Yes - musical family.

How long have you been publishing with Alfred, and how did that Q: relationship start?

25 years - Dennis Alexander introduced me to Morty and Iris Manus.

Q: Outside of editing, is there another role in music that's been just as central to who you are?

Educator, clinician.

Q: What do you want your body of work to add up to?

Write piano books with interesting repertoire that help teachers guide their students to learn and practice more efficiently and perform artistically.
