Description

Zaïs by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) was first performed on February 29, 1748 at the Opéra in Paris. It is a pastorale héroïque, a form of the opéra-ballet genre of French Baroque opera that draws subject material from pastoral poetry. Zaïs tells the story of the genie Zaïs, who disguises himself as a shepherd to win the love of Zélide, a shepherdess. After proving he is willing to give up his magic powers for his love, Oromases, the king of genies, grants the couple immortality so that they might marry. Zaïs is especially known for its spectacular and dramatic overture, which depicts the Palace of Oromases and his throne made from the four elements. Instrumentation: 2.2.0.2: 0.0.0.0: Perc(1): Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set).
