Description
When the Saints Go Marching In, arranged by Richard Hayman, derives from the traditional American gospel song that emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with early printed versions appearing by the 1920s and the melody gaining international fame through New Orleans jazz performances, most notably those of Louis Armstrong. Rooted in spiritual and revivalist traditions, the song became a staple of brass band processions and jazz funerals. Richard Hayman (1920-2014) -- renowned as an arranger, harmonica virtuoso, and principal pops conductor of the Boston Pops -- crafted his orchestral arrangement in the mid-20th century, transforming the familiar tune into a polished symphonic jazz-inflected showpiece. Hayman's arrangement remains a lively and audience-pleasing concert favorite. Instrumentation: 2+1(Picc).2+1(EH).2+1(BCl).2+1(CBsn): 4.4.3.1: Timp.Perc(4-5): Pno.Hp.Banj(or Gtr): Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). Newly engraved edition.
