Description
Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) composed Trois Chansons, M. 69 between 1914 and 1915 for unaccompanied mixed chorus during the opening years of World War I, uniquely supplying his own texts rather than setting existing poetry. The three songs - 1. Nicolette (Nicolet); 2. Trois beaux oiseaux du Paradis (Three lovely birds from Paradise); 3. Ronde (Roundelay) - combine Renaissance-inspired lyricism with Ravel's harmonic language and sensitivity to color. The central song, Trois beaux oiseaux du Paradis, serves as a poignant reflection on wartime separation and loss, lending the cycle a subtle patriotic and human dimension. Premiered in Paris on October 11, 1917, under the direction of André Caplet, the work quickly established itself as one of the finest achievements in French choral literature. Ravel later prepared versions of the songs for solo voice and piano, preserving their melodic elegance while allowing the poetry and expressive nuance of each miniature to emerge with greater intimacy. Today, Trois Chansons is celebrated both in its original choral form and in its solo arrangements, occupying an important place in the French art-song repertoire, admired for its distinctive blend of medieval, Renaissance, and modern influences. This edition includes the original French and a translation to English by Mme. Swayne Saint-René-Taillandier. Reprint edition.
