I remember playing second trombone on this in high school. So hard and yet soooo much fun.
I performed this in the Texas All State Symphonic Band in '67 with Harry Began conducting. Level 5-6 for sure.
Sheesh, I did this my sophomore year of high school. Loved every second of it but it took a lot of hard work to make it sound good. Second movement always gave me a "Silent Hunters" vibe of a submarine preparing to attack a convoy.
Missed the high D as first chair trumpet in hs. Never forgot about it 😢
I had to fill my friend's spot for this song a few days back because he was absent. He played timpani on this piece. I broke a timpani mallet during the one measure timpani solo at the end of movement three.
I was a trumpet player in high school when we played this and I remember how mad our band director got at us for always flacking that part at the end of the second movement. We had to explain to him that that was literally the only time we played for the entirety of the second movement lol. Also, movement 3 alone isn't even a grade 3.5, so I don't know what they were smoking grading this entire thing a 3.5.
