Description
Claude Debussy (1862–1918) composed his DEUX ARABESQUES between 1888 and 1891, early in his career, when he was still developing the distinctive harmonic and atmospheric style that would later define Impressionism. Written for solo piano, these two short pieces exemplify the refined elegance and fluid expressiveness of Debussy's early works. The first flows gracefully with delicate, rippling figures and lyrical melodic lines that evoke a sense of youthful optimism, while the second is more rhythmically animated and playful, with shimmering textures and subtle shifts of mood and color. Composed later, around 1909–1910, LA FILLE AUX CHEVEUX DE LIN ("The Girl with the Flaxen Hair") comes from Debussy's Preludes, Book I and represents the mature refinement of his style—a brief yet exquisite tone poem inspired by a poem by Leconte de Lisle. Its simplicity and radiant calm, expressed through flowing arpeggios and luminous harmonies, make it one of Debussy's most beloved piano works. Together, the Arabesques and La Fille aux cheveux de lin chart Debussy's artistic evolution from the charm and grace of his early style to the subtle impressionism and poetic restraint of his later years. This edition is transcribed by Alfred Piguet and Léon Roques for clarinet and piano.
