Description
Chester Biscardi originally planned this work as a horn trio to be performed on the same concert as Trio in E-flat, Op. 40. During the early stages of composition, however, he revised the piece into a quartet that functions musically as a modified trio. Acknowledging the often delicate acoustic balance between solo horn and solo violin, Biscardi added the viola to bridge the timbres of the two instruments, effectively combining it with the horn. The work is cast in a single movement comprising four sections. It is dedicated to hornist William Hoyt and pianist David Bishop. The title is drawn from "To the Lighthouse" by Virginia Woolf.
