Description
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's (1756-1791) singspiel DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE (THE MAGIC FLUTE), was written in 1791 and premiered on September 30th of that same year at the Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden, the theater run by Emanuel Schikaneder, who wrote the original libretto. An allegorical tale, Schikaneder's plot was influenced by Mozart's interest in Freemasonry, and involves the main character's (Prince Tamino) initiation into that philosophy as he, in attempting to rescue the Queen of the Night's daughter Pamina from the priest Sarastro, instead comes to admire Sarastro's ideals and joins his community instead along with Pamina. In Act II, No. 17, "Ach, ich fühl's, es ist verschwunden" ("Ah, I feel it, it is vanished"), Pamina has followed the sound of Tamino's magic flute and joyfully approaches him, unaware that he is undergoing a trial requiring him to remain silent; when Tamino refuses to speak to her and gestures for her to leave, she interprets his silence as proof that he no longer loves her. Left devastated, Pamina sings this intimate G-minor lament, in which Mozart surrounds her long, vulnerable soprano line with exceptionally restrained orchestral writing, transforming a simple misunderstanding into one of the opera's moments of deepest emotional truth; her despair subsequently becomes so profound that she contemplates death before the Three Boys intervene and reveal that Tamino still loves her. Today, "Ach, ich fühl's" stands among the supreme lyric soprano arias of the Classical repertoire, prized for the purity of its melodic writing, sustained legato, and extraordinary emotional concentration. Instrumentation: 1.1.0.1: 0.0.0.0: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set): Solo Soprano. Reprint edition.
