Description
Symphony No. 48 in C major, Hob. I:48 ("Maria Theresa") was composed in 1768-1769 by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) during his early years as Kapellmeister to the Esterházy court, a period marked by increasing experimentation and expansion in his symphonic writing. The symphony's nickname is traditionally associated with a visit by Empress Maria Theresa to the Esterházy palace, though it is uncertain whether the work was actually performed for her, and the title likely reflects later attribution rather than documented fact. Written in a bright C-major key often reserved for ceremonial works, the symphony includes a stately Adagio and a lively finale. Symphony No. 48 occupies a respected place in Haydn's middle symphonic output. Instrumentation: 0.2.0.0: 2.2.0.0: Timp: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set). Reprint of the Eusebius Mandyczewski edition, which was part of the Joseph Haydns Werke series.
