Description
Alexander Scriabin (1872-1915) completed his SYMPHONY No. 1 in E major, Op. 26, in 1900, creating an expansive six-movement work that reveals his early Romantic voice while hinting at the mystical idealism that would shape his later music. Scored for large orchestra, chorus, and vocal soloists, the symphony unfolds in a broad arc, from richly lyrical and introspective opening movements to an energetic scherzo and radiant finale. The concluding choral movement, with text written by Scriabin himself, is an ode to the power of art, celebrating music as a divine, ennobling force in human life. The symphony was premiered in Moscow on March 29, 1900, Vasily Safonov conducting. Today, while performed less frequently than his later symphonies and piano works, Scriabin's SYMPHONY No. 1 stands as a significant milestone in his artistic evolution, a lush, passionate testament to his early Romanticism and his lifelong belief in the transcendence of musical expression.
