Description
String Quintet No. 3 In E-Flat Major, Op. 97/B. 180 was composed in 1893 by Antonín Dvorák (1841-1904) during his summer stay in Spillville, Iowa, while serving as director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York. Written shortly after the "American" String Quartet and contemporaneous with the New World Symphony, the quintet reflects Dvorák's engagement with American musical influences--particularly Native American and African American melodic idioms--filtered through his distinctive Czech lyricism. The quintet was premiered on January 12, 1894, in Boston, and it quickly established itself as one of Dvorák's finest chamber works from his American period. Today String Quintet No. 3 holds a respected place in the chamber repertoire. Reprint critical edition.
