One moment…
Description
Your band will love the sweeping, cinematic feel of this one, full of rich harmonies and soaring melodic lines that really let your brass shine. It's a fantastic choice for your advanced ensemble, offering plenty of musicality without being overly taxing on any single section. The woodwind runs are well-voiced and lie comfortably, and the percussion writing adds a great sense of drama without needing an army of players. Song of the High Cascades was commissioned for the seventh Western International Band Clinic, 1985, and first performed there on November 23rd of that year by the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble of Vancouver with the composer conducting. The work attempts to express musically (rather than paint tonally) an impression of the grandeur and many-sided moods of the high country encompassed by the Cascades Mountains in Washington, particularly that region close to Mr. Rainier. The composer visited the area some years previously, and, while standing at Evita Falls, was over-whelmed when the sun suddenly broke through what had been a misty, overcast day revealing the whole of Mt. Rainier brilliantly clear, in all its resplendent glory. The music is built from two contrasting themes, one majestic and powerful, the other introspective and subdued. These themes, together with several subsidiary motives derived from them, are developed to a powerful climax representing the glorious moment when the late afternoons sunlight flooded the side of the mountain
