Leroy Anderson (1908-1975) composed Song of the Bells Waltz in 1953, creating one of his most elegant and imaginative orchestral miniatures during the peak of his long association with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra. Inspired by the distinctive sonority of bells rather than by any religious or Christmas tradition, Anderson sought to demonstrate that bells could serve as the principal color of a graceful concert waltz. As he later explained, the opening theme suggested the sound of bells, prompting him to write a work in which chimes and, in the central section, a glockenspiel engage in a sparkling duet that highlights their unique tonal qualities. Completed on September 8, 1953, Song of the Bells received its premiere the same day in a Decca recording session conducted by the composer, a common practice for Anderson's orchestral works before their public concert performances. Today, Song of the Bells Waltz remains one of Anderson's most charming concert pieces, frequently appearing on pops orchestra and concert band programs, particularly during the holiday season, although its appeal extends well beyond Christmas through its refined orchestration, memorable melodies, and quintessential blend of elegance, wit, and brilliant instrumental color.
