Description
Charles Gounod (1818-1893) completed the five-act opera Roméo et Juliette (Romeo and Juliet) in 1867. With a libretto by Jules Barbier and Michael Carré, the opera tells the tragic story of Shakespeare's play with little deviation. The work is well-known for the series of four duets sung by the main characters and the waltz song "Ah! Je veux vivre" as sung by the soprano lead. It premiered on April 27, 1867 at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris, Adolphe Deloffre conducting. The Overture introduces the opera's atmosphere of impending tragedy with solemn orchestral writing, while the Prologue -- delivered by chorus -- outlines the feud between the Montagues and Capulets and foreshadows the lovers' fate, serving as a dramatic frame for the unfolding action. Together, these opening sections establish both the grandeur and intimacy that characterize the opera. The Overture and Prologue are frequently performed as concert excerpts, either combined or with the Prologue cut, permitting performance of the purely orchestral Overture. A note directing where the appropriate cuts should take place is included in the conductor's score. Performance of the Overture only is 4 minutes. Instrumentation: 1+1(Picc dFl2).2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp.Perc(1-2): Hp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): Mix Chorus. [If choral Prologue is cut, Harp is not needed]. Reprint edition.
