Description
Elinor Remick Warren (1900-1991) composed her Quintet for Woodwinds and Horn between 1935 and 1937, during a period in which she was beginning to expand beyond the songs and piano music that had first established her reputation into larger instrumental and choral forms. Scored for the standard wind-quintet combination of flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and horn, the work reflects Warren's predominantly neo-Romantic musical language, combining lyrical melodic writing and rich harmony with the clarity and contrasting instrumental colors naturally afforded by the ensemble. Its composition coincided with an important transition in Warren's career: during the later 1930s she increasingly devoted herself to larger forms, culminating in such works as The Fountain and the choral symphony The Passing of King Arthur, whose success would establish her nationally as an American composer. The Quintet was premiered in 1937 by the San Francisco Woodwind Quintet, although some archival/catalog sources give 1936 as the work's date, reflecting the extended period over which Warren worked on the score. Today, Quintet for Woodwinds and Horn remains a comparatively little-known but valuable contribution to twentieth-century American chamber music, its expressive warmth and skillful writing offering wind players an attractive alternative to the better-known European works that dominate the quintet repertoire. This newly engraved publication has been edited by Clark McAlister.
