Description
A Latvian is a pagan, and Christmas is a proper pagan holiday. One of the traditions on the winter solstice is "going in bunches", when people dressed up in masks go from house to house and do various things, such as singing and dancing, or testing various Latvian folk beliefs. One of the beliefs that is also heard in this piece is that on Christmas night you should go and see if the bees are singing, if the bees are singing beautifully, it will be a warm summer.
Musically, this work combines the melody of a Latvian folk song with my own additions to the original music, in a rhythmically varied but thrusting set of notes. My version of what a folk music carnival would look like on the Latvian winter solstice.
