Description
Puerta de Tierra (Bolero) [No. 5 from Recuerdos de Viaje, Op. 71], transcribed here for cello and piano by J. Amaz, was composed in 1887 by Isaac Albéniz (1860--1909) as part of a piano suite inspired by the composer's travels through Spain. Named after the historic city gate of Cádiz, Puerta de Tierra evokes Andalusian color through the lilting bolero rhythm, guitar-like figuration, and modal inflections that reflect Albéniz's growing interest in Spanish nationalism filtered through Romantic salon style. The transcription by J. Amaz transfers the singing melodic line to the cello, enhancing the music's warmth and lyricism while retaining its dance character. Today Puerta de Tierra remains a popular encore and recital work in both its original and arranged forms. Reprint edition.
