Description
Poet and Peasant (Dichter und Bauer): Overture was composed in 1846 by Franz von Suppé (1819-1895) as the introduction to his incidental music for a play of the same name, a light rural comedy contrasting the lives and fortunes of a humble poet and a prosperous peasant. Utilizing the popular Viennese theater tradition of the mid-19th century, the story revolves around themes of social contrast, mistaken identity, and ultimately reconciliation, presented with humor and sentiment. The work premiered in 1846 in Vienna, where Suppé was active as a conductor and composer of stage music, helping to shape the emerging operetta style later associated with composers such as Johann Strauss II. The overture, far surpassing the fame of the play itself, combines a dramatic slow introduction, lyrical cello solos, and lively, and rustic dance sections. Today the Poet and Peasant Overture remains one of the most popular concert overtures in the repertoire. Reprint of the arrangement for band by John Gready.
