Poème lyrique in D-flat major, Op. 12 was composed between 1884 and 1887 by Alexander Glazunov (1865-1936) while still in his late teens, during the period when he was emerging as one of the most promising figures of the Russian nationalist school under the mentorship of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Written at a time when Russian composers were increasingly exploring symphonic tone poems and lyrical orchestral forms, the work suggests the influence of Tchaikovsky while also exemplifying Glazunov's own gift for lush melody. Although a specific premiere date is unknown, the piece was performed in Russian musical circles shortly after its completion and contributed to Glazunov's growing reputation as a prodigy. The Poème lyrique occupies a modest but appealing place in the orchestral repertoire, programmed for its elegant lyricism, rich harmonic language, and as an early example of Glazunov's mature style developing within the late-Romantic Russian tradition.
