Description
Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) completed the second version of the Petite Messe Solennelle in 1866-1867, orchestrating his intimate 1863 setting for four soloists, mixed chorus, two pianos, and harmonium into a full orchestral score. Having retired from opera composition after Guillaume Tell in 1829, Rossini regarded the Mass as the crowning achievement of his later years - his celebrated péché de vieillesse ("sin of old age") - and famously inscribed the manuscript with a humorous prayer asking God whether he had written "sacred music or damned music." Rossini undertook the orchestration largely to prevent others from doing so after his death, while also hoping to secure permission for church performance with female voices, a request ultimately denied by the Vatican. Honoring the composer's wishes, the orchestral version was withheld until after his death and received its premiere on February 28, 1869, at the Théâtre-Italien (Salle Ventadour) in Paris. Although many musicians continue to prize the transparency and intimacy of the original chamber scoring, the second version of the Petite Messe Solennelle has earned an important place in the choral-orchestral repertoire, admired for its masterful synthesis of operatic lyricism, contrapuntal brilliance, profound spirituality, and Rossini's unmistakable melodic genius, standing today as one of the great sacred masterpieces of the nineteenth century.
