Anton Webern (1883-1945) composed Passacaglia in D Minor, Op. 1 in 1908 as the culmination of his studies with Arnold Schoenberg, who recognized the young composer's exceptional contrapuntal skill and structural imagination. Although designated as his Opus 1, the work represents the end of Webern's late Romantic period rather than the beginning of his mature atonal and serial style. Built upon an eight-measure ground bass in the tradition of the Baroque passacaglia, the single-movement work unfolds through twenty-three continuous variations, combining the architectural discipline of Johann Sebastian Bach and Johannes Brahms with the richly chromatic harmonic language inherited from Wagner and Mahler. The Passacaglia received its premiere on November 4, 1908, in Vienna, conducted by the composer at one of Schoenberg's pioneering concerts devoted to new music, where it attracted attention for its remarkable command of orchestral color and formal cohesion. Today, Passacaglia in D Minor, Op. 1 stands as Webern's most frequently performed orchestral work and a cornerstone of the Second Viennese School repertoire, admired for its powerful synthesis of Romantic expressiveness and rigorous formal design while foreshadowing the concise, highly concentrated musical language that would define the composer's later masterpieces.
