Description
Oedipus Tyrannus, Op. 35: Overture was composed in 1880 by John Knowles Paine (1839-1906), one of the leading figures of the "Boston Six" and a foundational composer in the development of American concert music. Written as an orchestral prelude to a projected setting of Sophocles' tragedy, the work reflects the late-19th-century fascination with classical antiquity and the aspiration of American composers to engage with the grand traditions of European symphonic drama. Paine's overture combines solemn declamation, Romantic orchestral color, and a sense of tragic inevitability appropriate to the story of King Oedipus and his fateful downfall. It received its premiere in 1880 in Boston, where Paine's music was frequently championed in the city's growing orchestral culture. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). Reprint edition.
