Description
Charles Martin Loeffler (1861-1935) composed La Mort de Tintagiles, Op. 6, in 1897, drawing inspiration from Maurice Maeterlinck's symbolist drama of the same name. The work reflects the mystical and psychologically charged atmosphere characteristic of late nineteenth-century Symbolism, a movement that profoundly influenced many French and Franco-American composers of the era. The music depicts the tragic fate of the child Tintagiles, whose mysterious imprisonment and death unfold in a shadowy, dreamlike world dominated by unseen forces. Premiered in Boston, where Loeffler spent much of his career as assistant concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, on January 7, 1897 with Emil Paur conducting. Instrumentation: 3(3rd d.Picc).2+1EH.2+1ECl+1BCl.2: 4.2+2Cnt.3.1: 2Timp.Perc(2-3): Hp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): Solo Viola d'amore in set. Reprint edition.
